[Trahearne's tone is usually slow and measured, but today, it's practically melancholy. It's at odds with the otherwise good news that he has to share.]

I recently found employment.

It's at a place on the north end of the shopping district named Anovel's Antiques. I stopped in recently to ask where some of the pieces came from, and it seems that my interest was enough to land me the job. If any of you are eager to learn more about the cultures here, you're welcome to stop by. Every item here has a story, and leaning those stories is by far the best part of my job.

[Here he pauses and draws in a breath, as if bracing himself, but what comes out isn't what he meant to address. He's not sure he can say it out loud, not yet.]

I likely won't be at the Dreaming Bridge very often for the next week or so. I - I need some time to steady myself. I'll keep my yimo on me to stay in touch.

I apologize. I didn't mean to be quite so maudlin. Someone I was fond of is... gone.

I'm the last person to have any right to take offense at a melancholy disposition. You don't have to apologize for that. But it certainly explains the discrepancy in tone.

It seems people are vanishing left and right. Do you know where they've gone?

According to the Bridge staff, they've likely been returned to their home worlds. It seems that the Dreaming is fickle when it comes to who remains here and who doesn't.

[The Fool suspects that he knows his friend well enough by now to be able to tell when something is amiss with him. He contemplates his reply carefully before responding.]

Your new work sounds delightful! [his enthusiasm is not feigned, though the concern creeps into his tone.] I shall of course visit you; I am always in the market to acquire more trinkets, and learning more of the history of this place interests me.

[that, he thinks, is a safe way to begin.]

I'll be looking forward to it. I'm fairly certain I could spend hours talking about what the shop has in stock - though I'll try not to delay you quite that long.

[if this is how he is more comfortable communicating for now, the the Fool is glad to accommodate.]

No need to worry about delaying me; I am not overwhelmed with work requests at the moment and could use the distraction.

The ample distractions are a large part of why I this the job, to be honest. I can certainly help you with that as well.

[now they're getting somewhere,]

I have been told that I am, on occasion, a good listener.

I get the feeling you're not talking about antiques anymore. It's... the man I dated seems to have disappeared from Aifaran entirely. If he's returned to his home world, then I fear that the implications... are not kind.

[indeed he is not--and at this revelation, the Fool feels a pang of regret for pushing.]

The Dreaming can be cruel. Truly, I am sorry that this has happened to you.

What was he like?

A fair bit crueler to him than to me. He died before arriving here, just as I had. What awaits him now back on his world? An afterlife, or simply - nothing? ... I'm sorry. I'm trying not to dwell on it, but it's hard to know if I should be mourning or not. Bastien had a zest for life that I see all too rarely. He was a bit of a troublemaker to boot, but despite everything, he was very kind to me.

[ Rutile knows Trahearne only by sight; still, it is strange to hear someone so discouraged about finding a place in society. Perhaps some encouragement is in order. ]

I would be happy to take you up on such an offer, whenever you feel quite on your feet. I’d like to know more about our hosts in Aifaran.

Congratulations on the employment, also. Archival jobs are crucial; though overlooked, we have much to learn from the past.

I'll be glad to share what I know, both about the antiques and what I've learned here. The residents are generally quite nice about answering questions as well. As much as I agree, this position is far more about selling to customers than keeping records, but I suppose there's a little bit of that involved.

Do you have any pieces laid with minerals or other stones? I would be interested in knowing the local significance of such things.

And ah, that is unfortunate. I hope you can at least impress upon them that the value of their purchase goes beyond price.

The shop doesn't often deal in jewelry, but I believe we have a pin, and a couple of small statues that incorporate some kind of gemstones. I think one of the vases uses something less rare. I'll ask the owner about those pieces before you stop by. I'll certainly do my best. I would hope that most of our customers are more interested in the history than they are in home decorating.
