[Pepper is grinning from ear to ear. Behind her, ribbons and paper decorations in an autumn color scheme have taken over the walls of the townhouse she lives in. She's even affixed a bow in her hair, and it looks like she's done battle with something glittery.]

Guess who's twenty-one?

[Spoilers: it's her. Somehow. She was 17 when she first arrived in Keeliai.]

If this were home, that would mean I could legally drink alcohol, which is kinda a big deal, but less of one here because they don't have the same rules. I can barely believe I've spent more than three years in Konryu, it totally flew by. Anyway, it's my birthday on November 12, but Bakura and Gene had birthdays at the end of last month, so we're throwing a combo-box shindig for all three of us.

If you know us and you want to come join the party, let me know! There will be tons of food because half of our friends are bottomless pits, and party games that will either be hilarious or super awkward, and we can pretend like it's fall and maybe find a pile of leaves to jump in.

So when you say "half" your friends are bottomless pits, do you really mean "just Tony, actually, but I'm trying to be polite about it"?

[ He does eat enough to sustain at least three normal people, so, honestly, that would be fair. ]

[Teasing:] You are talking to the girl who out-ate Happy Hogan, if I wanted to call you out I'd just do it. [She sticks her tongue out at him.]

You probably do eat the most of anyone I know, but there's a couple other people here who haven't stopped eating like teenagers yet. Probably because some of them are teenagers. Any chance of re-creating the ice cream maker?

Good point. Have I mentioned before that that was magnificent and terrifying? [ Only about a thousand times, Tony. ]

I can't say anything about the ice cream maker, because if I did say something, and then I built it, it wouldn't be a surprise anymore, and I'm pretty sure birthday presents are supposed to be a surprise.

So, we never had this conversation, and if anyone asks, I'm getting you shoes.

[ Obviously ridiculous. He would never trust himself to buy Pepper shoes. Pepper loves shoes, and Tony has the fashion instincts of a potato. ]

Yeah, but I'm not gonna get tired of hearing it any time soon.

[It is an accomplishment worth bragging about.

His attempt at deflecting has her giggling immediately. They both know he would only buy her shoes if she were using his credit card again.]

Uh huh. Okay, sure, shoes, yep. I'll keep that in mind. [A pause for more giggling.] Don't ever become a spy, you'll be terrible at it. And that's before we get to the problem of everyone knowing your face.

I painted my superhero suit bright red and gold and put rockets on it, I don't think 'spy' was ever going to be a good career track for me.

[She laughs, nodding in agreement.] Good point. You have trouble with subtle even in the stealth suit.

[Less trouble, but it still happened.]

As long as you're having fun building whatever it is that you're building, and you're not blowing anything up, I will pretend you're getting me shoes.

Does this mean I can't come by the workshop until after the party? What are you gonna do if I wanna drop in at random? [This is teasing; back home, they came and went to the armory as they pleased. Tony's private workshop is a little bit different territory.]

No offense, Pepper, but if you come into the workshop and I'm working on anything other than the armor, are you even going to know what you're looking at?

[ Rhodey couldn't even tell you what the heck Tony is building most of the time, and he's in Tony's lab more often than anyone besides Tony himself. ]
