So I'm kind of stumped. I kind of want to find a job around here. [The Dreaming Bridge was nice enough, but with no school and no ghosts to fight around here, Danny was starting to get incredibly bored.]

But you know, I'm not really sure what I could do besides the local equivalent of flipping burgers. Anyone got any ideas?

Huh, seriously? Hiring to do what?

[Clearly the most important question.]

Fix stuff. Build stuff. Invent stuff. Sell the stuff we invent. You know, genius engineer things. You in?

So... just like home then. [With slightly fewer explosions, he hoped.]

Sure, count me in.

[Danny had never considered himself any kind of inventor. But hey! He'd picked apart enough of his parent's inventions in the last few years. He could probably pick up building and fixing things fast enough.]

[Now, Danny, what makes you think there will be any fewer explosions?]

Awesome. I took out a loan for the rent on a workshop. You want to come check it out? I'm setting up basic equipment right now, so if there's anything you want, we should get to work building it.

What kind of skills do you have?

You mean job skills? I made sandwiches for a restaurant for a while, and then I did basic maintenance stuff at a hotel for a while. You know, changing lightbulbs and installing doorknobs.

That's it? Nothing extraordinary? Just 'making sandwiches' and 'changing lightbulbs'? Where I come from, we already made robots to replace people like you!

Yeah? So what do high school students do for their first jobs, if burger flipping isn't on the list any more?

Rifling through trash for money and bullets, for the most part. But if you've got ambition, you'd start thinking big.

Pretty sure ambition is something no one has ever accused me of. [One of the few things he'd never been accused of.]

Euuugh... So you're just fine with that? Flipping burgers for the rest of your life? C'mon, kid. Is there anything in life that you really want?

Not the rest of my life. But it isn't like going to school here will help me out at all when I get home.

[And he was going to go home for good. Some day. He hadn't given up on that yet.]

And seriously. I'm sixteen. I'm not supposed to have the rest of my life to figure out yet.

[Right now the only thing he knew was that superheroing wasn't about to go away. ]

Sure, maybe not. But you can get internships while you're here. Experience always looks shiny on a resume.

....Right. And when someone asks about where this internship was, I tell them what exactly?

You say a company in a foreign country. It's technically true. C'mon, be a little creative.

And then they ask why a perfectly ordinary midwest teenager somehow got an internship in a foreign country? That somehow doesn't have an address or an email address or a phone number?

Unless you're applying for a high level job right away, they're not gonna care too much to check the validity of all that, kiddo.

Put something that weird on a resume? Of course someone is going to ask. Its weird and weirdness stands out.

[Although it wouldn't be as big a deal for someone who wasn't going to extra effort to make himself look normal. At least as normal as things got when you were a Fenton. ]

Kind of depends, when no one knows you from the next guy.

[An easy sort of smile which hopefully makes him sound like less of a jerk.]

What're you good at?

[Danny suspected that fighting ghosts and witty banter weren't marketable skills.]

Sounds like a place to start. Probably more than a few restaurants need someone extra, even if it's only for dishes.

[A shrug and pause.]

Maintenance isn't bad either. Everyone needs things fixed.

I guess. I'm kind of hoping to find something a little more interesting this time.

I mean, there's only so much you can do when people don't know you yet.

[Reputations get built. Zephyr's been on the other end of it. There's another shrug.]

Mercenary work? Odd jobs? You'd never get bored, but you'd always be looking for the next job.

[Most of Danny's experience with reputations had been dealing with having a bad one. Ghosts didn't usually get positive press.]

So.... you're saying I need to get a publicist?

[He makes a face.] Yeah... I think I'm going to have to pass on the mercenary idea. Odd jobs might work, though.

[Not unkindly, Zephyr snorts.]

Do some work for people who'll speak well of you to others, and it'll spread. Only takes a little.

What'll it be? Fence painting? Pet-finding?

[Now he's teasing a little.]

Either or, I guess.

[He sort of had experience with pets? If you counted ghost animals? And that weird bird that kept showing up. ]

[Zephyr holds off on suggesting charging to help little old ladies cross the road. That'd probably be a bit much.]

Worth asking around near the places you go a lot. Everyone knows someone who needs help. If you're feeling really ambitious, you could put up flyers.

[It takes Danny a moment to respond, as he gets distracted by some of his other messages.]

Hey, thanks for the advice. But looks like I've got something lined up now.

Hey, good for you.

[Pleased little smile.]

I don't have to offer to help with flyers, then.

I might still keep that in mind if this job thing doesn't work out.

[With his luck, ending in disaster was always a possibility. ]

Hey, I didn't offer yet.

[He's joking. Mostly.]

I'll keep the asking in mind, then. [That was definitely a joke. ]

[Zephyr laughs, a quick bark of amusement.]
