So, uh, I could use some help.

[The video is clearly being filmed outside, and the camera is focused on a little white bibiru with a crooked wing and patch of brown fur over one eye. It is doing what bibirus do best: look cute and eat grass. Kit's voice is audible before he turns the yimo around so he can be seen by the camera.]

Help me name this damn thing.

[he points the camera back at the bibiru and whistles once to get its attention. It perks up cutely, ears and nose a-wiggle. It squeaks.]

[Devin is smirking, and no one is surprised. The incoming needling is delivered with enough amusement to be clear he's not making fun of Kit to be mean.]

Crowdsourcing, are we? Is it really that difficult to pick a name?

[And judging by the lopsided smile that accompanies the dwarf's eye roll, he accepts the needling in the spirit that it is intended.] Yeah, well, the last time I had a pet, I was about yea tall--[he indicates being perhaps half the height he is now, which is already not much to speak of,]--and it ended up dinner for the squatters in the hovel behind mine. Didn't get the chance to name it.

[man that got dark. He scratches the back of his head.] ...anyway, you got any ideas, or did you just show up to make me look bad?

[Does Kit have a dark story for everything? Devin's eyebrows go up slightly.]

Cheerful.

[Considering pause.]

Pick a book or a story that you like, and take a name from there. [Longer pause. Luthien is also Devin's first real pet. He's never really had the time before.] That's what I did for Luthien.

[The inan in question, having heard her name, appears on the screen over Devin's shoulder-- and starts tugging gently on his ear.]

[Having been figuratively dead for three quarters of his life, it's probably safe to say that most of Kit's stories are dark. But he can laugh about them! That's got to be something, right?

When Luthien appears on Devin's shoulder and announces herself by taking a friendly bite out of his ear, Kit cracks a grin and chuckles.] Is she getting bigger, or is that just my imagination?

What story does her name come from?

[Seriously, they need a support group.

Devin bears the playful tugging with about as much grace as one can when your pet has a mane and a tail that would rival the world's best feather dusters. She's not holding on that hard, and seems content to be relocated to his arms.]

It's possible. I don't actually know how old she is.

[His expression briefly takes on a more guarded slant, but he decides this is a safe enough subject. It's not as though people don't already associate him with books, working at the library.]

The Silmarillion. It's a collection of mythology for a fictional world created by one of my world's most famous authors. She was not a maiden to sit around and let men fight dragons for her, to make a very long story short.

Sounds like my kind of lady. [you know, if he was into them.] Dragons don't mess around where I'm from.

[He looks back at the bibiru, which has flopped itself down in the grass on its side and stretched out its little limbs in an adorable display of contented laziness.] Three different people have suggested some variation on the name 'spot,' so it looks like that's what I'm gonna go with.

[Devin arches a brow.] Dragons seem to be more than a little common among Dreamfolk. Interesting. [It's probably just a random coincidence, but the vampire has always had a sense of academic curiosity.]

How delightfully mundane. [He gives the bibiru another look.] But it does fit. What have you been calling it this whole time? 'Hey, you'?

[a pause--a crooked smirk--and a shrug.]

Yeah, pretty much.

[look he'll take care of the blasted fuzzball and keep it from harm, but he's not that creative of a dude.]

You may have some trouble training it to recognize a new name, in that case. [Devin, you really don't have to needle him about everything.]

Assuming they're trainable. Bibiru husbandry is not among my many talents. [Luthien takes this moment to lick Devin's chin, drawing a quiet sigh but no actual protest. Inan training may not be among his talents, either, it seems.]
